When people think about installing tile they most often think of ceramic tile. Ceramic tile is certainly a popular choice for Indianapolis homes but it isn't the only option. GLASS
Often made from post-consumer (what you recycle from household use) or post-industrial (what manufacturers recycle) glass, glass tiles are becoming extremely popular because they are eco-friendly and use a substance that used to end up in landfills. Since glass comes in a multitude of colors, recycled glass tile is available in a wide spectrum of shades and can be designed into all types of patterns.

MARBLE
Marble is a derivative of limestone. It is a metamorphic stone that can be polished. Marble is characteristically soft and easily scratched or etched by acids and should be considered cautiously in most rooms.

MOSAIC

I am a graduate of Ball State University with a bachelor's degree in House Design. I have been in the floor covering industry since 1990 and started working with Kermans in 2005. I enjoy working with builders and homeowners alike. From helping the customer select flooring for their new home, then coordinating with the builder on site production and scheduling – I love seeing a home site taken from framing stage all the way through final finishes.

At the end of the day my two beautiful girls keep me busy with school, soccer and volleyball. We enjoy the country living with our six pets. I relax by grooming my flower beds.

But our service doesn't stop there - our professional installation team will make sure the carpet is installed in your home properly which makes a big difference in how long your carpet lasts.

Many of Kermans installers have been working with us for 15 years or more and their experience makes a big difference. You can also make a difference by making sure you and your home are appropriately prepared:

WHAT TO KNOW AND DO BEFORE INSTALLATION

Determine who is responsible for moving furniture and other objects from the area to be carpeted. Installers can do this but will charge an additional fee.
Review your moldings and baseboards – they may need to be removed for installation and if so, any breakage or paint retouching will be your responsibility after installation. Our installers try to be very careful, but scratches and scrapes to painted surfaces can’t always be avoided.
Be sure to move all breakables, computers and electronics before your installation.

WHAT TO KNOW AND DO DURING INSTALLATION
Be prepared to be at home the day of installation and be available in case the installation crew has questions. Your presence will insure that the correct carpet is installed in the right areas. But plan to stay out of the way, your installers will be using a variety of tools and equipment and you do not want any children or pets underfoot. We also recommend that you walk thru your newly carpeted areas with the chief installer to ask questions and be aware of any final details.

Five Easy Carpet Care Tips

In the Middle Ages, floors were covered with rushes and when they got dirty, they were thrown away! There are probably times where you'd like to have a disposable carpet in your home but with a few quick tips - you can keep your carpet looking like new (no trash can required).

Five Easy Carpet Care Tips

1. Use entrance mats to brush most of the dirt off your shoes before walking on your carpet. Even better - always take your shoes off before walking on carpet.

2. Treat a stain as quickly as possible so it doesn't have time to soak into your carpet. Many common carpet stains colas, juice, jelly etc can be cleaned by a simple solution made from 1 teaspoon of white vinegar mixed with 1 quart of warm water. Blot the spot dry working from the outside of the stain in, then rinse with the water solution and blot dry again - never scrub the carpet.

3. To remove gum from carpet, try pressing ice cubes against the gum until it becomes brittle and breaks off. Then clean with vinegar/water solution noted above.

4. Get rid of carpet odors with baking soda. Sprinkle baking soda on dry carpet and let sit overnight. Vacuum thoroughly the next morning.

5. Vacuum your carpet weekly (or more in high traffic areas) and have it professional cleaned every 12 to 18 months.

Hardwood has always been a beautiful choice for a floor but it hasn't always been an easy choice. Today’s finishes make hardwood floors more water-resistant and easier to maintain than ever before. That’s not to say that you can wet mop your floor like tile but you can do some simple regular maintenance to keep your hardwood looking as good as new.

A few basic care tips:

Sweep your floor or use a dust mop daily. Kermans offers micro fiber dusting mops for this purpose.
A hardwood floor cleaner is useful in removing occasional scuffs or heel marks. Spray some cleaner on a cloth and lightly rub the stained area. Sticky spots can be cleaned with a damp towel or sponge. Check out our selection of Bona Cheme solutions for cleaning.
Do NOT use cleaning products (Murphy’s Oil Soap, Old English, wax, conditioner etc) each time you clean your floor; use water and cleaning products sparingly to increase the longevity and sheen of your final finish coat.

Helping families in Illinois and Indiana that are living with breast cancer

We wanted to take a moment to share with you a special cause that we at Kermans are very passionate about and a Foundation that is really making a difference in peoples' lives.

The Sharon Bassett Foundation provides critical assistance to families living with breast cancer. The family receives a signature gift basket and a personal call or visit from a volunteer. Then the magic begins. The foundation takes the time to learn what this family needs and do everything possible to make their dreams come true. Gifts have included things like: utilities paid for one year, transportation costs, groceries, Christmas gifts for the children, prescription costs, wigs, trips of a lifetime, and gift certificates for special dinners to name a few.

Kermans became involved two years ago through an employee who supported and volunteered in the Pay it Forward program. Kermans participated as well and donated carpeting last year to one of the single moms who was fighting cancer and needed carpet in her home.

Now we regularly take part in the Foundation's silent auction that is held each year at their annual Parrot Party, a fun Jimmy Buffett-themed party held each year in June that enlists the help of friends who play for the Indianapolis Colts.

Our first priority is talking to you because we want you to learn and understand carpet as a floor covering before you spend your money. Carpet isn't just something you buy - it's something you live with (and on)! So what should you consider before carpeting that great room in Greenwood, that dining room in Fishers or that bedroom in Carmel?

Here are a few tips from our design consultants (check out our carpet buying guide for more):

CARPET SEAMS
Carpet is most often available in 12 foot width. Unless the room to be carpeted is narrower than these widths, the carpet will need to be seamed. Don't worry, we talk to you about the size of your room and the flow of traffic to best determine seam placement for minimum impact.

COLOR
Carpet covers a large area so the color carries a big impact. We strongly recommend you take samples home and "live" with them for a few days. Look at them in natural light at different times of day. Look at them under the lights in the room and move them around so they are next to walls and furniture to get the best sense of how the color looks in your room.

PAD
Simply put, carpet padding, the layer of material that lies between the carpet and floor, can make the difference between a good feeling carpet and a great one. We'll talk to you about the pros and cons of a variety of pad weights.

Important questions to ask before buying an area rug

When looking for an area rug you can be faced with such a dizzying array of options, you might be wondering where and how to start! It is important that the rug fit the room – and we’re not just talking about size. You also need to consider foot traffic, lighting and the overall use of the room before selecting an area rug. Are you starting with an empty room or do you need to match an existing color scheme? Does the area already have a lot of furniture? These are just some of the things to consider when looking for an area rug. As you start shopping, these are the questions you should ask the sales person:

What color rug would work for my home? A rug with a bold, overall design can be the focal point of a room with a chair and sofa in solid or subdued patterns. Light colored rugs make a room look more spacious. Deeper colors lend coziness to a room. You might want to bring a picture of the place where you want to put the area rug to help determine colors and patterns. Check out these room scenes to get a feel for the impact an area rug can make.

Quick Tip: Remember to bring a sofa cushion, a pillow, a piece of art, a paint chip or take a swatch of any fabrics you’d like to match with you when you shop for a rug. That way, you’ll have a better idea of what will complement your existing décor.

What shape would work best in your space? Don’t be boxed in by the idea of getting a rectangular rug. Kermans offers round, square and custom shaped rugs as well.

What size rug do you need? Before you go shopping, measure the size of the room and the area you want to cover. To make the room appear larger, show a border of the flooring around the perimeter of the room. The type of room and furniture placement must also be taken into consideration. There are no official rules for furniture being placed on or off the rug. Sizing up a room to make sure the rug is proportional should be a design decision. Kermans design consultants will be happy to talk through the pros and cons of different options with you.

How busy is the activity in the room where you're placing the rug? You might need a pattern that hides wear. Fringe may not be the best choice for you. This is also a good time to consider a rug pad. Kermans' pads absorb the impact of feet and noise, reduce wear and tear on the rug and make vacuuming easier.

What type of rug do you need? Don’t discount machine-made rugs. They look strikingly similar to a handmade rug, but they’re usually much less expensive. In a North Carolina mill during the 1920’s, Marshall Field & Co. created an exciting and innovative product – machine-made oriental design rugs of high quality at realistic prices. More than 5 million people left their footprints, spills and ground-in food stains all over Karastan’s “Wonder Rug”at Chicago’s World Fair in 1933. In 1977 Karastan developed the first designer carpet with famous fashion icon Halston.

Clean your area rug - Protect your Investment

Protect your investment.

Treating delicate rugs such as Orientals, Silks, Machine-Made, Antique and all other handmade area rugs each require unique special attention for proper cleaning and the best results. The best cleaning technique and method that is dependent on your area rug's particular weave, fibers and dyes.

There are several steps involved to properly and effectively clean your area rug.

Pre-Inspect. It is important to inspect the condition of your rug for fading, discoloration, stains, wear, pre-existing damage, color instability and odors. Our specialists then determine what can be cleaned and the appropriate cleaning procedures to be used. (Keep in mind that discoloration due to wear, fading, or chemical reaction is not reversible.)
Dust. Dust and particulate matter lying deep within the rug are removed using specially designed tools before your rug is washed. Vacuuming, shaking or beating your rug can never completely remove dirt and dust. Foot traffic and dry soil can act like sandpaper on the fiber and it is important they are removed before deep cleaning occurs.
Pre-Treat and Pre-Clean. Spots, spills and stains should be treated using the advanced spotting techniques that are also safe for your rug. These should be used for heavily trafficked and soiled areas.
Agitate, Dissolve, Suspend and Extract the ground in soils.
Rinse. Repeated rinsing further removes soil and cleaning residue - restoring the natural feel.
Restore. Special grooming tools are needed to restore your rug’s nap.
Fringe Cleaning. The fringe of your rug should be cleaned with special care. Fringe whitening is also an option to consider if color is significantly dingy.
Dry. Rugs should be dried in a climate-controlled drying room. Drying time is typically less than 24 hours.
Final Inspection. The inspection process must be thorough. Never hesitate to repeat any steps that might be necessary to provide you with the cleanest rug possible.
Stain resistant. Once cleaned, apply a wool-safe stain resistant to your rug to help prevent any new spillage or dirt from penetrating the rug to ensure it stays cleaner longer.

7 Quick Tricks to Care for your Hardwood Floors

Hardwood flooring is an investment and it is important to take care of them properly to keep them beautiful.

Luckily, today’s finishes make hardwood floors more water-resistant and easier to maintain than in the past. That’s not to say that you can wet mop your floor like tile but you can do some simple regular maintenance to keep your hardwood looking as good as new.

Murphy Oil Soap should not be used
on unfinished, unsealed, or waxed
wood surfaces because they may
be water sensitive.

Sweep your floor or use a dust mop daily. Kermans Fine Flooring in Indianapolis offers micro fiber dusting mops for this purpose.
A hardwood floor cleaner is useful in removing occasional scuffs or heel marks. Spray some cleaner on a cloth and lightly rub the stained area. Sticky spots can be cleaned with a damp towel or sponge. We carry and suggest Bona solutions for cleaning hardwood floors to our clients.
Do NOT use cleaning products (Murphy Oil Soap, Old English, wax, conditioner etc) each time you clean your floor; use water and cleaning products sparingly to increase the longevity and sheen of your final finish coat.
Never wet-mop a wood floor. In all cases, use minimal water, because water causes deterioration of the wood itself as well as the finish. Avoid using mops or cloths that leave excessive water on the floor. Never let a spill of water dry on the floor. Never pour water directly onto the floor.
Place floor mats or area rugs at each entryway to collect dirt and grit that might be tracked in. These tiny particles act like sandpaper and will scratch your floor. Be sure to avoid using rubber-backed or non-ventilated mats or rugs as they can damage your floor. Instead use mats or rugs made especially for hardwood floors and remember to shake them out regularly.
Use a humidifier throughout the winter months to keep wood movement and shrinkage to a minimum.
If you have pets, keep their nails trimmed, they can and will scratch a wood floor.

Solid Hardwood
Typically milled from a ¾ inch thick piece of hardwood. It can be sanded and refinished for a lifetime of use. You can choose between domestic and exotic wood species giving you a wide selection of colors and grain patterns. Most common types of wood floors are Ash, Cherry, Maple, Oak and Pine.

Engineered Wood
Engineered wood floors are generally manufactured with 2, 3 or 5 thin sheets of wood that are laminated together to form one plank. This cross-ply construction creates a wood floor that is dimensionally stable and less affected by moisture than a traditional solid wood floor. Cross-ply construction stops the plank from growing or shrinking with changes in humidity. Another key advantage is versatility. Most engineered floors can be nailed down, stapled down, glued down or floated over a wide variety of subfloors, including some types of existing flooring and concrete slabs.

Cork
Cork represents a special kind of flooring because it comes from a harvested resource (only the bark is harvested from the tree). Cork floors are made from the waste cork that makes wine stoppers. Cork is appealing to many homes today because it is a renewable resource; a recycled product and with water-based finishes and adhesives creates a long lasting, comfortable floor.

Bamboo
A relative newcomer to the natural flooring market, bamboo is a grass that regenerates faster than wood making it an excellent green-friendly product. The hardness varies a bit more than wood but offers a similar look and feel.

Laminate
Today’s laminate floors are available in a multitude of designs, patterns, and textures, yet they all consist of four main components that are bonded together. On top of these layers is a final wear layer that provides protection and wear resistance able to stand up to even the most active households.

Carpet Installation Checklist

People do not get new carpet all the time. It is an exciting change for your home. We put together a quick list of what you should know and do after installation.

Don't be surprised...
Some of the chemicals used in the construction of carpet, as well as the adhesives or hot melt seaming tapes, can have an odor for as long as 48 to 72 hours after installation. So be prepared to provide the room with adequate ventilation. And get out the vacuum! Shedding is a natural part of a new carpet. Frequent vacuuming for the first few days should remove any loose fibers from the carpet’s surface.

It is not unusual for carpet seams to be visible for a few days following installation. The seams will “walk down”, or disappear, as you walk on the carpeting. Depending on the type of carpet you select, it may have a somewhat crushed appearance once installed. This is normal, and is a result of the carpet having been rolled tightly for shipping. Humidity will make the carpet “bloom”. If your carpet is installed during the winter months when humidity levels are lower, you may find that running a humidifier will help.

Installation Checklist

Disconnect and remove all computers and electronic equipment from rooms where flooring is to be installed.
Remove all breakable items from areas where flooring is to be installed, and place the items in a safe location.
Remove all items from tabletops, desktops, etc.
Empty and store the contents of bookshelves, entertainment centers, armoires, etc.
Clear the floor areas of closets where flooring is to be installed. We request that a space approximately three (3) feet above the floor be cleared so our installers have more room to move.

Tricks to extend the life of your carpet

The most important factor in caring for your carpet is vacuuming properly.

Vacuuming your carpet helps:

Preserve the cushiness of your carpet,
Extend the life of your carpet and
Improve the air you breathe.

How to properly vacuum your carpet:

Vacuum it thoroughly and frequently.
Removing loose soil while it remains on the carpet surface prevents dirt from being ground into the carpet pile.
Use slow repetitive front-to-back motions in an overlapping sequence.
On the other hand, don’t press down or make too many passes over the same spot.
Move slightly to the left or right about every four strokes.
For rooms with light traffic, vacuum the carpet traffic area twice weekly and the entire area once weekly.
In areas with heavy traffic, vacuum the carpet traffic lanes daily and the entire area twice weekly.
3 to 5 passes of the machine will suffice for light soiling, but 5 to 7 passes are necessary for heavily soiled areas.
Change the direction occasionally to help stand the pile upright and reduce matting.
